Grade 9, Electrical Production in Alberta Project
Your task will be to come up with a presentation, planning for the future of electrical production in Alberta.
To do this successfully you will need to do the following:
1. Assess and evaluate how we currently produce electricity in our province.
i. What types of electrical production do we use and in what amounts?
ii. What are the characteristics of these forms of electrical production?
iii. What characteristics of our province, society and economy influence the production of electricity within our province?
2. Come up with a plan for the future of electrical production in our province.
i. What types of electrical production should we reduce or eliminate? Be specific to the productions sites in use. This must be accompanied with reasons why.
ii. What types of electrical production should we start to use, or increase the use of? Be specific to the productions sites you would propose. This must be accompanied with reasons why.
iii. Ensure that you are taking into account societal, economic and environmental concerns, comment on how each of these influences are being taken into account.
iv. Be sure that your plan takes into account the use of electricity increasing or decreasing in the future and within what area of the province.
3. Evaluate the current government and private process that are involved when considering electrical production.
i. Who decides what electrical production is implemented within our province, how much government control is there versus private business, how much government control is needed compared to markets influencing decisions?
4. Survey your local community, assessing their knowledge and views on different forms of electrical production.
i. What are the views of the constituents within our community? Do they have a clear understanding of the decision making process regarding electrical production in our province, the characteristics of electrical production sources and how they fit within the characteristics of our communities, environment and society.
*** All of your findings in parts 1-4 parts will need to be summarized in a cumulative report/presentation. This report or presentation will possibly be presented to your local MLA for their review.
5. Write a business letter to our local MLA, asking to present your findings.
i. If possible you will be presenting your research findings as a presentation to your local MLA. Your presentation can be created in a number of approved formats such as video presentations, research papers or in person.
ii. In order to do this though you will need to write a properly formatted business letter to your local MLA outlining your purpose and asking for the opportunity to present your findings.

** This project is a collaborative project with groups no larger than three students. Each student must commit to certain responsibilities within the project and all group member submissions will be recorded and used during this projects scoring.

** This project is best completed within your Google Drive accounts, due to high level of collaboration that is needed, in addition to the Google Forms you can use for your survey and G-mail accounts you can use to contact each other in addition to various experts.
